“The Heart of Sports” is a weekly column that curates the stories, pictures and moments that provide a window into the beating heart of sports:

  • The father-son bonds forged in sport.
  • The tender moments among teammates.
  • The heart-stopping speeches from coaches.
  • The thrilling moments from your childhood that you never forget.

It’s why we watch. It’s why we play. It’s the stuff that rises up out of sports and settles down into us.

This week’s column comes from Tiger Woods’ timeless Masters win this past Sunday. For the uninitiated, Tiger Woods used to be the absolute King of the Sports World, a dominant golfing force who would win tournament after tournament.  Then, the fall from grace: Marital problems, physical and mental breakdowns, and numerous back surgeries that put his career in jeopardy. Most thought he was done.

When Tiger won on Sunday, he embraced his son, Charlie. Charlie had decided to attend the tournament at the last minute, unexpectedly.  The father-son embrace, echoed the father-son embrace the Tiger and his own father shared when a young Tiger won his very first Masters.

A whole lot of life had happened in between. This time, Tiger was on the father side of the embrace and not the son.
